Education

Dr.-Ing (Magna cum Laude) (2011 - 2018)*

I was awarded a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Institute of Continuum Mechanics, Leibniz University Hannover (Germany). I completed my doctorate under the advice of Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Peter Wriggers. The doctoral committee included Prof. Jean-Francois Molinari from EPFL, Switzerland and Prof. Friedrich Dinkelacker from LUH, Germany. I landed in Germany on 10-Oct-2011, thesis was submitted on 10-Oct-2017 and defended on 25-May-2018.

The title of my thesis was “Micromechanics, fracture and contact behavior of nanoparticle reinforced polymers”. The work explores novel approaches in the area of nano-tribology and present an innovative outlook towards micro-mechanical modeling of contact-induced fracture in filled polymers. The work was funded through a scholarship from Continental Tires GmbH.

Engineer (2008 - 2009)

I was awarded an Engineer degree in Aeronautics from GALCIT at California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA (USA). This is equivalent to a thesis-based masters in most other universities across the world. The title of my masters thesis was “ Simulation of Dynamic Interface Fracture Using Spectral Boundary Integral Method” and advised by Prof. Nadia Lapusta. The members on the committee included Prof. G Ravichandran and Prof. Chiara Daraio.

The study was funded by a research and teaching assistantship. The Engineer degree can be pursued upon successful completion of the M.S. degree and started on 14-Jun-2008 and graduated during the 115th Annual commencement held on 12-Jun-2009.

M.S. (2007 - 2008)

I was awarded an Master of Science degree in Aeronautics from GALCIT at California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA (USA). This is equivalent to a course-based masters in most other universities across the world. The course work included 15 courses in solid and fluid mechanics, applied mathematics, experimental methods to be completed in 9 months. The study was funded through the Russel R. Vought Fellowship from Caltech.

I landed in the US on 09-Sep-2007 and graduated during the 114th Annual commencement held on 13-Jun-2008.

B.Tech (2003 - 2007)

I was awarded a Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK). In 2003, NITK ranked 5-8 among all technical institutes in the country. An admission required clearing an entrance examination and scoring in the Top 2% of the country. The entrance examination, was then attended by 200K+ students.

Schooling (1991 - 2003)

  • 2001 - 2003: Pre-University, National College Basavanagudi, Bangalore (India)

  • 1991 - 2001: Sri Kumarans Children Home, Tata Silk Farm, Bangalore (India)

Notes

  • Dr.-Ing: It refers to “Doctor of Engineering”. The German degrees specify the area in which a doctorate is awarded. For example: While Dr.-Ing is for Doctor of Ingenieur where “Ingenieur” is the German equivalent of the “Engineer” in English. Similarly, a Doctor of Medicine is awarded a degree with title “Dr.med,” where “med” stands for medicine
